At the 2024 Academy Awards, Martin Scorcese's Killers of the Flower Moon is up for a whopping 10 nominations, including in categories like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor.
At the ceremony, Scott George and the Osage Singers performed a sonorous and emotionally whiplashing version of "Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)" from the film. Viewers of the film will recognize the Osages' heady percussive and vocal conjurings, bringing these themes into immersive relief. Watch it above.
Speaking to Variety, George noted that the words to "Wahzhaze (A Song For My People)" are altogether simple, yet charged with import.
"'I'm asking my people to stand up.' The next phrase translates as 'God made it for us.'" he explained. "The expression I'm trying to say is 'Stand up, be tall and be proud. We're still here after all of that."
As crimson lights were cast over the stage, George and the Osage singers built the momentum, driving home the themes of generational grief, trauma and resilience that permeate this late-career triumph for Scorcese. At the 2024 Oscars, the composition is up for Best Original Song.
