Almost 30 years ago, Alanis Morissette painted heartbreak through a series of unfortunate and (debatably) "Ironic" situations, like "rain on your wedding day" or "a 'No Smoking' sign on your cigarette break." As she declared in the outro, "Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you" — because when everything is going right, something is bound to go wrong.
In this episode of ReImagined, Aliah Sheffield delivers her soulful rendition of Morissette's "Ironic." While the R&B songstress' vocal delivery remains faithful to the original recording, her classic R&B production gives it a soothing twist.
Sheffield's performance also pays homage to Morissette's music video — but rather than singing in a car during a wintery day as Morissette did 27 years earlier, Sheffield rides down a decrepit desert road in a convertible.
Outside of covers, Sheffield released her debut solo project, These Songs Are For Anyone Sick of Earth, on June 9 via Def Jam Recordings, led by singles "Earth Is Ghetto" and "Boo Boo The Fool." (The former also inspired the name of her book club, Earth Is Ghetto, I Wanna Read.)
