Biography
"Performing, for me, has always been a very inner process."
- Born Barbara Joan Streisand on April 24, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York
- While her first four albums debuted in the Top 10, it was 1964's People that reached No. 1 and put her on the mainstream map, with the title track hitting No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
- The legendary diva's 1963 debut, The Barbara Streisand Album, earned Album Of The Year honors at the 6th GRAMMY Awards, as well as Best Vocal Performance, Female. Streisand participated in one of the first signature GRAMMY moments at the 22nd GRAMMYs in 1980, when she memorably sang "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" with Neil Diamond.
- Did you know? Streisand has won two Oscars, one in 1968 for Best Actress for her role in Funny Girl, and again in 1978 for Best Original Song for "Evergreen (Love Theme From A Star Is Born)." The latter also earned her two GRAMMYs for 1977 for Song Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.
- Stephen Sondheim presented Streisand with the GRAMMY Legend Award in 1992. Three years later, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award.
- Streisand was named the MusiCares Person of the Year in 2011, receiving a pre-taped video message from former President Bill Clinton. Seal, Leona Lewis, Lea Michele, LeAnn Rimes, Barry Manilow, Tony Bennett, and Stevie Wonder were among the performers at the tribute gala, which raises proceeds for MusiCares.
- Her Streisand Foundation donates money to many charitable causes, providing financial support to environmental, women's and youth advocacy groups, and AIDS research, among other causes.
