Biography
"Punk is always something that's going to be with us and to try and explain that would be stupid at this point." — Billie Joe Armstrong
- Members: Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, Tré Cool
- Formed in 1986 in East Bay, California
- Green Day took off following their 1994 album, Dookie, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and spawned three No. 1 hits on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart: "Longview," Basket Case" and "When I Come Around."
- The band earned their first career GRAMMY for 1994 for Dookie, which won Best Alternative Music Performance. Green Day made their GRAMMY stage debut at the 47th GRAMMY Awards in 2005 for a performance of the title track from their GRAMMY-winning album American Idiot.
- The follow-up to 2000's Warning was originally a 20-track album titled Cigarettes And Valentines, but the masters were stolen from the studio before its release. The band scrapped all the songs and released American Idiot in 2004 instead.
- Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt joined Armstrong's son's band, SWMRS, for a 2016 concert benefiting victims of the Ghost Ship Fire in Oakland, California.
