Biography
"If something is worth doing, it's worth overdoing."
- Born Nile Gregory Rodgers, Jr., on September 19, 1952, in New York City.
- Rodgers garnered his first No. 1 hits with his band Chic's debut album C'est Chic. The songs "Le Freak" and "Good Times" both reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Le Freak" held the distinction of being Atlantic Records' best-selling single for the next 37 years. Rodgers also produced "We Are Family" for Sister Sledge in 1979, which went No. 1 on Billboard's R&B chart.
- Rodgers won his first three career GRAMMYs at the 56th GRAMMY Awards for his work with Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams on Daft Punk's Random Access Memories. Rodgers' work on the record earned him Album Of The Year, as well as Record Of The Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Get Lucky."
- Did you know? Nile Rodgers got his start as a session player with the "Sesame Street" traveling band.
- Rodgers was honored with the President's Merit Award by The Recording Academy's Producers & Engineers Wing in 2015. He has also served on The Academy's National Advocacy Committee and as a Trustee for The Academy's New York Chapter.
- Rodgers founded the We Are Family Foundation in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in New York City. The foundation began partly with Rodgers' decision to re-record the titular single with "a diverse community of artists, actors, personalities, firefighters, policemen, and everyday citizens affected by the tragedy," and help commence the healing process. The foundation now dedicates its efforts "to creating programs that promote cultural diversity while nurturing and mentoring the vision, talents and ideas of young people who are positively changing the world."
