• Born Feb. 11, 1941, in Niterói, Brazil
   
• After touring the world and recording with Cannonball Adderley and Herbie Mann, and playing Carnegie Hall, Mendes moved to the U.S. and eventually recorded his debut album, Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66, which hit No. 7 on the Billboard 200. The album featured the Billboard Hot 100 hit "Mas Que Nada."
   
• Mendes landed his first GRAMMY nomination for 1968 for Best Contemporary-Pop Performance, Vocal Duo Or Group for his cover of the Beatles' "Fool On the Hill." His first GRAMMY win came for 1992 for Best World Album for Brasileiro.
   
• His 2006 album, Timeless, a collaboration with will.i.am, featured special guests Justin Timberlake, Erykah Badu, Q-Tip, India.Arie, and Jill Scott, among others.
   
• Mendes paid tribute to Paul McCartney at the 2015 MusiCares Person Of The Year tribute concert, performing "Fool On The Hill." The annual gala raises funds for MusiCares, which provides services and resources that cover a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies for music people.
   
• In 2015 Mendes joined forces with MusiCares partner Starkey Hearing Foundation in Rio de Janeiro to provide more than 200 children and adults with fitted hearing aids followed by a trip to hear their first live concert.
