Biography

"I do not like being famous. I like being normal."

  • Born Vincent Grant Gill on April 12, 1957, Norman, Oklahoma

  • In 1979, Gill made his debut with the country rock band Pure Prairie League. He went on to perform with bands such as Bluegrass Alliance, Cherry Bombs and The Time Jumpers before launching a lucrative solo career. His tune "If It Weren't For Him," a duet with Rosanne Cash from 1985's The Things That Matter, earned the singer his first Top 10 country hit.

  • Gill won his first GRAMMY for 1990 for Best Country Vocal Performance, Male for "When I Call Your Name."

  • Did you know? Mark Knopfler once invited Gill to join his band Dire Straits. The singer politely declined the offer but went on to contribute backup vocals on the band's 1991 album, On Every Street.

  • Gill has been an active supporter of MusiCares and has participated in GRAMMY Camp.
  • Gill is on the board of directors of the Nashville Predator Foundation's charity organization.
