"Everytime I show up, blow up," BLACKPINK sings on their debut single, "Whistle," as if predicting the future. Since then, every step taken by the smoldering quartet grew larger and larger, until they became a worldwide storm — recognizable by people who can barely pinpoint South Korea on a map.

Dubbed "the biggest girl group in the world," and Time's 2022 Entertainer of the Year, BLACKPINK have collected a litany of accolades, chart-topping hits, and brand deals throughout their nearly nine years together. From fashion weeks all over the world to a virtual in-game concert on PUBG Mobile, "BLACKPINK in your area" has never been a more accurate tagline.

With 2022's Born Pink, BLACKPINK became the first K-pop girl group to sell more than two million copies of an album. Born Pink was also the first album by a female Korean act and by an all-female group in over a decade to top the Billboard 200 chart upon release, evidencing their popularity and the work of their highly-committed fandom, BLINK. Their Born Pink World Tour not only broke the record for highest-grossing trek of all time for an Asian act, but also for a girl group; they also made history with their 2023 Coachella set, becoming the first Korean group to headline the festival.

But the members of BLACKPINK don't only shine as a group. JENNIE, LISA, ROSÉ, and JISOO are superstars on their own, and each of them have pursued solo careers that translate their singular allures. In a matter of three weeks, BLINK received sets from JISOO (Amortage), LISA (Alter Ego) and JENNIE (Ruby) — and those arrived just three months after ROSÉ unveiled her debut set, rosie, in December. And to top off the excitement, BLACKPINK announced they'll be returning to the stage together for a limited run of shows this summer.

As JENNIE's Ruby arrives, GRAMMY.com breaks down all of the quartet's solo endeavors.

JENNIE

It was up to rapper and vocalist JENNIE to kickstart the group's solo debuts. On Nov. 12, 2018, she released the straightforward "Solo" — a minimalistic pop single that showcases both her sweet timbre and sassy rap lines. "Used to be your girl / Now I'm used to being the GOAT," she sings, while parading a slew of lavish outfits that helped establish her as a fashion icon.

"Solo" was a phenomenon upon release, topping Billboard's World Digital Songs chart. Its choreography went viral, and its music video became the most viewed by a female K-pop solo act in 24 hours. Less than six months later, JENNIE added more history to her solo resume, becoming the first Korean solo act to perform at Coachella when she sang "Solo" during BLACKPINK's set.

2023 marked a big year for JENNIE, as she made her acting debut later on HBO's series "The Idol" in July and officially released her second solo track, "You & Me" — which she'd teased during BLACKPINK's Born Pink World Tour — in October. She also teamed up with "The Idol" costars The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp for "One of the Girls," a track featured in the show. And just before the end of the year, JENNIE revealed that she had founded her own record label, Odd Atelier.

While working on her debut studio album, JENNIE kept busy in 2024, releasing two collabs: "Slow Motion" with Matt Champion for his album Mika's Laundry, and "Spot!" with fellow South Korean star Zico. But perhaps the most exciting release was the anthemic "Mantra," the first taste of her debut set.

JENNIE wasted no time as soon as 2025 began, announcing in January that her first solo album, Ruby, was set to arrive on March 7 via Odd Atelier and Columbia Records. She followed the big news with two pre-release singles, "Love Hangover" and the Doechii-featuring "ExtraL," before delivering the full 15-track LP. Also featuring collabs with Dua Lipa, Dominic Fike, FLK, and Childish Gambino and Kali Uchis, Ruby stunningly displays JENNIE's wide-ranging talent and magnetic charisma.

ROSÉ

More than two years after JENNIE's solo debut, vocalist and dancer ROSÉ unveiled her debut single album, R, on March 12, 2021. With writing credits on both title track "On the Ground" and second single "Gone," Rosé laid bare an intimate version of herself and her struggles.

R was also a sweeping commercial success, setting the highest first-week sales by a Korean female soloist at the time. The music video for "On the Ground" earned an impressive 41.6 million views in 24 hours on YouTube, breaking Psy's "Gentleman" record for the most viewed music video by a Korean soloist in that same timeframe (a record that was later broken by LISA — more on that later). The song became the highest-charting by a Korean female soloist in the United States by peaking at No. 70 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

Other than her disco-inspired solo track "Hard to Love" on BLACKPINK's Born Pink, ROSÉ didn't deliver any more solo tunes until Oct. 18, 2024 — but it was the start of an exciting chapter. "APT.," featuring Bruno Mars, marked ROSÉ's first single from her long-awaited debut solo album, rosie.

Titled after her nickname, rosie offers a blend of vulnerability and emotional depth, with standout tracks like the introspective "Two Years" and the soaring breakup track "toxic till the end." The album showcases Rosé's range, stepping away from BLACKPINK's signature electro-pop sound into a more personal, stripped-back style that emphasizes her distinct voice and storytelling.

LISA

Just six months after ROSÉ, rapper and dancer LISA debuted with her own single album, Lalisa. Featuring the titular track and B-side "Money," the September 2021 release also broke several records, including the highest first-week sales among all Korean female acts, with 736,221 copies sold.

A reference to her birth name, Lalisa Manobal, and filled with allusions to her Thai roots, the single album reintroduced LISA as a splendid, unforgettable performer. "Remember my name that's standing right in front of you/ Love you some L-A-L-I-S-A," she boasts on the title track, as if the world needed another reminder.

Both "Lalisa" and "Money" charted on Billboard’s Hot 100 at No. 84 and No. 90, respectively, and the latter became the first song by a female K-pop soloist to chart for multiple weeks. A month after Lalisa's arrival, LISA furthered her global appeal by co-writing and co-composing "SG," a moombahton collaboration with DJ Snake, Ozuna, and Megan Thee Stallion. In 2022, she became the first solo K-pop artist to win both an MTV Video Music Award for Best K-Pop Video for "Lalisa," and an MTV Europe Music Award for Best K-pop.

Similar to ROSÉ, LISA waited three years to follow up her debut single album — but the long wait was well worth it. LISA released not one, but three songs in 2024: "Rockstar," the ROSALÍA collab "New Woman," and "Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me)" (as well as a festive "Santa Baby remix" of the latter). All three tracks are featured on LISA's highly anticipated debut solo album, Alter Ego, which arrived on Feb. 28.

The 12-track album serves as an intriguing exploration of her multidimensional artistry, represented by five unique personas woven into the LP's tracks and visuals. Just before releasing Alter Ego, LISA also got to show off her acting chops in Season 3 of HBO's beloved series "The White Lotus," marking her Hollywood debut.

JISOO

A year and a half after Lalisa, JISOO concluded BLACKPINK's solo debuts with her own single album, Me, on March 31, 2023. The vocalist and burgeoning actress (best known for her roles in South Korean dramas like "Arthdal Chronicles" and "Snowdrop") presented her sublime elegance through title track "Flower" and B-side "All Eyes on Me."

Both songs follow minimalistic EDM melodies, allowing JISOO's unique tone to shine as she seeks freedom in the lyrics. In "Flower," she warns an ex-lover that "I fly away like a blue butterfly/ It’s all on you that you didn’t hold on," while "All Eyes on Me" sees her defying anyone to "Hold your breath and watch me, I’m a movie."

Like her bandmates, JISOO also broke records — she was the first K-pop female solo artist to become a million-seller, with Me exceeding 1.31 million pre-orders before the track arrived. And along with reaching No. 2 on Billboard's Global 200 chart, "Flower" became the highest-peaking song on the Canadian Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart by a Korean female soloist.

JISOO launched her own label, BLISSOO, in February 2024, hinting exciting things to come. Almost exactly one year later, JISOO delivered the first taste of her new chapter with Amortage, her debut EP. Featuring four tracks all co-written by the singer, the bubblegum pop project sees JISOO exploring the many stages of love while highlighting what she does best: craft earworms that make you want more.

With record-breaking feats and an array of sounds, each member of BLACKPINK has proven to be able to hold their own distinctive musical careers. Whether they're conquering the world together or apart, BLACKPINK has already created a remarkable legacy that shows no signs of stopping.
