Top music industry professionals were on hand to discuss the variety of career opportunities available in the music industry with approximately 500 Memphis-based high school students at GRAMMY Career Day on Feb. 6. A panel and eight workshops addressed a wide range of music industry careers including public relations, recording, engineering, music production, graphic arts, record label administration, and music education. In the event's featured panel, titled Producers' Communications Techniques, composer/producer Kendrick "WyldCard" Dean, engineers/producers Boo Mitchell and Ralph Sutton, and recording artist Wendy Moten gave students an inside look at the producer/artist relationship. Students were also able to learn about topics such as production, sequencing and various production programs in Overton High School's piano laboratory/studio. Finally, students were treated to a dynamic performance from Memphis legendary R&B/soul group the Bar-Kays and Memphis Chapter President Al Kapone, who was accompanied by Overton High School's 30-piece orchestra.
