GRAMMY U members and high school students from South El Monte High School participated in a GRAMMY SoundChecks with Chickenfoot on Sept. 27 at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, Calif. Students were eager to learn about this "supergroup," featuring the talents of bass player Michael Anthony (Van Halen), vocalist Sammy Hagar (Montrose, Van Halen), guitarist Joe Satriani, and drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers).
When the students arrived they were escorted through the backstage entrance and led to their seats in the first few rows of the Gibson Amphitheatre, where the witnessed an energetic and entertaining soundcheck by Chickenfoot.
Following the soundcheck, GRAMMY U members participated in a question-and-answer session with the band. Students came prepared with various questions covering topics such as how the band was formed and the differences between Chickenfoot and each member's respective band and project.
When asked about their educational backgrounds, the band emphasized the importance of a college education and the equal value of real-life experience. Students asked the band what encouraged them to keep going and while the band first admitted that fame and money might have given them motivation, they agreed that a love for music is what gives helps an artist maintain career longevity. When one student asked Hagar if he had any advice to give them, he responded by advising the students to stay true to themselves.
At the conclusion of the event, Chickenfoot's team provided attendees with tickets for that evening's concert.
