The GRAMMY U students had been waiting for this GRAMMY SoundChecks opportunity since it was announced at the GRAMMY U membership drive about a month prior. The students — 27 from Dallas Baptist University, one from Texas State University and one from San Antonio College — walked into the theater not knowing what to expect. They relaxed when Evanescence's Amy Lee greeted them as they gathered in the pit for an intimate mini-concert. The students were able to request their favorite Evanescence songs, which included the hit "Call Me When You're Sober."
Following the last song, the band met with the students to answer their questions. Amy Lee (vocals, piano), Terry Balsamo (guitar), Tim McCord (bass), Troy McLawhorn (guitar) and Will Hunt (drums) gave very honest answers to the questions regarding recording in the studio, record labels and life on the road. One student said, "What surprised me the most was to hear Amy, the singer, saying she is the only one in the band under a contract to a record company."
To their surprise, the students were invited to stay for the concert. One student summed it up best: "The most fascinating part about the evening was watching the band transition from practice, Q and A, and then into a live performance. The night overall had a surreal feel to it."
