On March 10 the Memphis Chapter of GRAMMY U, together with the GRAMMY Foundation, hosted a GRAMMY SoundChecks with GRAMMY-winning artist John Mayer at the New Orleans Arena for 50 students. Mayer performed songs including a cover of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" from his new album Battle Studies. Following the soundcheck, students were directed to a backstage room for an intimate question-and-answer session with Mayer. Students ask questions on topics ranging from his writing process to technical studio questions to building a brand. Mayer spoke regarding the difference between simplicity and complexity when creating a song, concluding that simplicity often produces the best results. Mayer also explained that as a solo artist it's important to have control over everything from your music to the design of your MySpace page. He also provided words of advice for students entering the music industry saying, "If even on your worst day you love what you're doing, then you know you're meant to do this."

Students connected with Mayer as he told stories of what he was like at their age, and attendees left engaged and inspired from his down-to-earth and humble advice.
