Mike Nichols, a GRAMMY-winning comedian and award-winning director, died Nov. 19 of cardiac arrest. Born in Germany, Nichols moved to the United States at age 7 and graduated from the Walden School in New York. He subsequently relocated to Chicago in the early '50s, where he joined the comedy troupe the Compass Players and met comedian/actress Elaine May. Nichols and May recorded four comedy albums, including 1960's An Evening With Mike Nichols And Elaine May, which earned a GRAMMY for Best Comedy Performance. An acclaimed director, he won an Academy Award for best director in 1967 for The Graduate. Nichols also earned multiple Emmys, including outstanding miniseries in 2004 for "Angels In America," and Tonys, including best director in 1965 for "The Odd Couple" — making him one of only 12 individuals to have won an Emmy, GRAMMY, Oscar, and Tony award.
