As R&B singer Durand Jones reveals in "Gerri Marie," it's hard to come to terms with the idea that you can't be the person you want to be for the person you deeply love — but that doesn't mean you can't show your appreciation for them.
"[Gerri Marie] has such a welcoming spirit and presence," Jones told GRAMMY.com earlier this year. "I wanted to capture all those beautiful things about her."
In this episode of Press Play, Jones delivers a touching performance of "Gerri Marie." While Jones plays the piano, a string orchestra adds to the warm, romantic ambiance of the song.
"Gerri Marie/ So fine, so free/ And when she smiles at me/ The whole world starts to quake/ Under my feet," Jones croons in the first verse.
"Gerri Marie" is the opening track from Jones' latest album, Wait Til I Get Over. The project is heavily inspired by the works of visual artist Teresita Fernández and his hometown of Hillaryville, Louisiana.
Later this year, Jones will embark on an international tour, beginning July 17 in Osaka, Japan, and concluding Nov. 18 in Tucson, Arizona.
