A fundamental Sikh principle, Chardi Kala — which literally translates to "positive attitude" — is an aspiration of maintaining a constant state of joy even in a period of adversity. It's a way of living Punjabi musician Sonny Singh has incorporated into his everyday life, but also hopes to share with the world through his album titled after the concept.
In this episode of Positive Vibes Only, Singh delivers an uplifting performance of the lead single and titular track from Chardi Kala, driven by the singer's calming vocals and interludes from his trademark trumpet.
The message of "Chardi Kala" becomes increasingly apparent as Singh repeatedly sings, "Live in eternal optimism, with ever-rising spirits." As he continues the declaration, he shows appreciation for Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism: "Shout aloud in ecstasy, true is the great timeless One/ Nanak, with naam (name) comes eternal optimism/ And with your blessings, peace and well-being for everyone."
Released in 2022, Chardi Kala is Singh's debut studio album, described as a collection of "Punjabi anthems to uplift and ignite." Singh previously performed internationally as a vocalist and trumpeter in the bhangra brass band Red Baraat. The Brooklyn-based singer is slated to perform at the city's BAMKids MLK Day Celebration and will embark on a North American tour with Red Baraat in March.
