GRAMMY winner Beck recently visited The Recording Academy's headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif., to participate in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview. Beck discussed the different approach he took to recording his 2014 album, Morning Phase, and Elvis Presley's influence on his single "Blue Moon," which is featured on the album.
"I was thinking more along the lines of something that was just ignoring a lot of trends and current styles of recording," said Beck regarding his creative process for Morning Phase. "I kept being drawn to an idea of something that was a bit outside of what's happening and [creating] something I could listen to maybe five, 10 [or] 15 years [from now] and it still sounds the same."
Born to conductor/arranger David Campbell and musician/actress Bibbe Hansen, Beck emerged in 1994 with his debut major label album, Mellow Gold. Spanning genres from psychedelic rock and rap to folk and country, the album climbed to No. 13 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of the Top 10 hit "Loser," which earned Beck his first GRAMMY nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Teaming with GRAMMY-winning production team the Dust Brothers, Beck released his sophomore set, Odelay, in 1996. The album spawned four hits, including "Devil's Haircut" and "Where It's At," the latter of which earned a GRAMMY for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Odelay also earned Best Alternative Music Performance honors and a nomination for Album Of The Year.
Beck subsequently earned GRAMMY nominations for Best Alternative Music Album for Midnite Vultures (2000), which also earned an Album Of The Year nod, Sea Change (2002), Guero (2005), and Modern Guilt (2008). In 2009 he began actively working as a producer, collaborating with artists such as Charlotte Gainsbourg and Thurston Moore, in addition to recording covers of classic albums with his Record Club.
Beck returned in 2014 with two albums of original music. Released in July, Song Reader comprises interpretations of the 20 songs that were previously released in Beck's 2012 same-titled book of sheet music, including contributions by fellow GRAMMY winners Fun., Norah Jones and Jack White. Released in February, Morning Phase peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and features 13 tracks written by Beck, including "Blue Moon" and "Heart Is A Drum."
Beck is scheduled to perform at the 2015 MusiCares Person of the Year tribute concert to Bob Dylan, taking place during GRAMMY Week on Feb. 6.
